Luis Sumoza, M.D. is a board-certified Medical Oncologist and Hematologist based in Florida with The Oncology Institute of Hope & Innovation. Dr. Sumoza graduated from the Medical School of the University of Carabobo, Venezuela, where he also completed his training in Internal Medicine. He has an extensive background in the management of early diagnosis and treatment of infections in immunocompromised cancer patients. While at MD Anderson Cancer Center, he was a co-author of many publications in the field of infectious diseases. He completed his Hematology / Oncology Fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Sumoza’s clinical experiences include stem cell transplantation for patients with blood disorders and improving treatments for older patients who have acute and chronic leukemia.
As an attending physician at John Stroger Hospital of Cook County in Chicago, he joined the faculty of the Department of Medicine as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Hematology / Oncology at Rush University. During that period, he led several research clinical trials with a focus on malignant hematology. In addition, he was attending physician with the Division of Hematology / Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri
In 2016, Dr. Sumoza and colleagues at several institutions in the Chicago area joined together to form the Chicago Multiple Myeloma Rounds Committee. Their collaborative effort led to the implementation of several Multiple Myeloma Rounds. As a result of the success of the program, the Committee decided to expand the program to other multiple myeloma communities around the country. Dr. Sumoza is a dedicated mentor, loves teaching, and clinical and research settings.
