Dr. Mohammed Hassan Sabbagh is The Oncology Institute’s medical director for the state of Texas. He brings over 34 years of valuable medical expertise, with specialties in hematology, internal medicine, and oncology. Dr. Sabbagh obtained his medical degree from Damascus University Medical School in Syria before moving to the U.S. for his residency at St. Barnabas Hospital Family Practice in New York City. He then went on to complete his fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2001. We wanted to ask Dr. Sabbagh some questions so that his patients can get to know him better.
- What made you decide to go into medicine?
I have always had a passion for serving others, and medicine struck me as a noble profession in that way.
What is your favorite part about your job?
I am fond of the relationships I build with my patients in partnership with their families. I find the highest reward in being able to help them alleviate pain, navigate difficult circumstances, and try to overcome.
- What is your patient philosophy?
Every patient is unique, and in oncology, the patient is facing a difficult diagnosis. My job is to make the best medical information accessible and digestible to my patients to partner with them and design a treatment plan centered around their bespoke needs. It is important to maintain an honest dialogue with the patient and educate them about the disease and their probabilistic outcomes (chances) while deciding the next steps for them.
- What would you tell someone who was just diagnosed?
You are not alone. I am here for every one of my patients, we will work hard to give you the best care possible, and whatever it takes, I will be standing by you every step of the way.
