There are more than 120 types of tumors that can grow in the spinal cord and brain, and collectively they are known as central nervous system (CNS) tumors, which are abnormal growths. CNS tumors can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). While researchers do not fully understand why some CNS growths become cancerous, there are well-established symptoms and risk factors.

Signs and symptoms of CNS cancer vary widely because a tumor may press on different parts of the spinal cord or brain, affecting different functional areas of the body. Whether benign or malignant brain tumors are present, both adult and child patients may experience:
With spinal cord tumors and cancers, patients may experience:
These signs and symptoms do not necessarily indicate you have a benign or cancerous tumor. Even if you have a cancerous growth, you may not experience these signs and symptoms. Your doctor may recommend imaging scans, neurological exams, a biopsy, or other tests to diagnose your condition.
If you have been diagnosed with CNS cancer, your doctor will likely use a grading system to assess how fast the cells grow and classify their abnormality. Grades one and two are considered low grade for cells that look closer to normal and grow slowly, while grades three and four are considered high grade for cells that appear more abnormal and grow quickly. Your doctor will try to determine where the tumor began, its position and size, and which treatments might be appropriate. Based on these factors, your doctor will offer a prognosis.
During treatment, your medical team will monitor your tumor and symptoms and adjust your care as needed. CNS cancer recurrences are possible and may leave patients with long-term signs and symptoms that may be manageable. You may receive support for these additional cognitive and physical impacts.
