What Cancer Types We Treat

Cancer refers to diseases in which cells in the body grow abnormally and uncontrollably, spreading into other parts of the body. To speak more accurately about cancer, doctors divide cancers into types. We can talk about cancers that affect specific parts of the body, such as testicular cancer, thyroid cancer, or brain cancer. We can also classify cancers according to how they begin and the parts of the body where they first grow.

At The Oncology Institute, we treat the following cancer types.

Carcinoma begins in the cells that cover the body’s surfaces, such as the lining of organs. From there, they can grow tumors and spread to other parts of the body. Carcinoma cancers are the most common types of cancer.

Some of the cancer conditions we treat in this category include:

  • Bladder cancer
  • Choriocarcinoma
  • Esophageal/esophagus cancer
  • Gallbladder cancer
  • Gastric cancer
  • Kidney (renal cell) cancer
  • Larynx cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Non-small cell lung cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Rectal cancer
  • Skin cancer
  • Small-cell lung cancer
  • Throat cancer

Lymphoma begins in the white blood cells, which are responsible for fighting disease in the body. We treat two main types of lymphoma — Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The primary difference is that with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Reed-Sternberg cells are present in the body, which are abnormal lymphocytes. In non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, these cells are absent.

Multiple myeloma is another type of cancer we treat. This type of cancer originates in a white blood cell called a plasma cell and affects the bones.

Leukemia is a cancer that affects the stem cells in the blood. We treat:

  • Acute lymphoblastic leukemia
  • Acute myeloid leukemia
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
  • Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)

These cancers affect the brain and the spinal column. At The Oncology Institute, we treat brain, head and neck, and other central nervous system cancers.

Central nervous system cancers are different than other types of disease because they can press on parts of the brain or spinal cord, causing serious complications. Our goal with treatment is to address the uniquely challenging signs and symptoms of tumors in this part of the body.

About one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, making it one of the most common cancers. We treat invasive, advanced, and in situ breast cancer. We also offer treatment for male breast cancer, including supportive services for all breast cancer patients.

Gynecologic cancer refers to any cancer that begins in a part of a woman’s reproductive system. While pap smears and HPV vaccines have reduced deaths from cervical cancer, other cancers in this group remain high.

At The Oncology Institute, we offer treatment for cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, and uterine cancer.

Why Specialization Matters

There are many areas of specialty in oncology. You may work with medical oncologists or hematologist oncologists. surgical oncologists, and other specialized professionals. Some medical professionals specialize in a specific type of cancer, such as skin cancer.

It is essential to find the right medical professional with experience treating your specific type of cancer. A specialist provides several advantages:

  • They have explained this cancer many times and can speak to you clearly, in a way you understand.
  • Specialists have a narrow area of focus and are therefore aware of the best practices, latest treatments, and guidelines for your specific condition.
  • They see many patients with the same cancer and are prepared for different complications and outcomes.
  • They actively study this area and may be aware of emerging technologies and clinical trials relevant to your specific type of cancer.

Remember — no two cancers are the same, and no two people are the same. When you work with specialists at The Oncology Institute, you are working with a team dedicated to your specific experience.
