National Nurses Week: Celebrating the Nurses Who Care for Us

With more than 5.5 million registered nurses and licensed practical nurses in the United States, nursing represents the nation’s largest health care profession. These skilled professionals handle a wide range of tasks, from administering medication to coordinating care. National Nurses Week is an annual celebration recognizing all that they do, and the expertise, compassion, and dedication they bring to patients every day.

What Is National Nurses Week?

National Nurses Week is an annual celebration honoring the essential role nurses play in delivering quality patient care. The week begins on May 6 and ends on May 12 — Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Florence Nightingale built the foundation for modern nursing during the 19th century through her revolutionary approaches and commitment to improving patient outcomes. Her legacy continues today.

How Is National Nurses Week Celebrated?

Health care organizations celebrate National Nurses Week in many ways. Some host special events to honor nurses’ accomplishments. Others show gratitude more simply, through gifts or personalized notes to each team member. Whether large or small, meaningful recognition shows these professionals that their work makes a lasting difference.

When Did National Nurses Week Start and Why Was It Created?

The history of National Nurses Week began in 1982, when President Ronald Reagan officially made May 6 “National Recognition Day for Nurses.” It wasn’t until 1990, though, that the American Nurses Association expanded this special day into a weeklong celebration. Three years after that, the ANA Board of Directors set May 6 to May 12 as the permanent dates for the observance.

National Nurses Week was created to honor these professionals’ commitment to patient well-being and to raise public awareness of their indispensable role in health care. Studies have found that nurse staffing levels and contact time directly impact patient outcomes.
